The Markale open air market, which today offers a beautiful array of fruits and vegetables, was the scene of two of the bloodiest massacres during the Bosnian War. In February 1994, 68 people were killed and another 144 wounded when the market was hit by a 120mm artillery shell. In August 1995, the market was hit again with a barrage of mortar shells killing 43 more people and injuring 75. The latter attack finally prompted NATO military intervention which helped lead to the end of the war later that year.
